We operate three big game hunting areas at different times of
the fall hunting season.
The Scapegoat Wilderness
area (out of Lincoln) is where we operate our early season (September -
early November) combination elk hunt and deer hunting.
This area is one of only two areas in Montana where elk hunting is allowed during the
bugle with a rifle. The primary big game hunting focus in this area is taking the mature bull
elk, however, we have taken some nice mountain mule deer during the elk hunt.
The Boulder Drainage area (south of Big Timber) is where we operate
our mid season (mid November) mountain goat hunts for those hunters who
are lucky enough to draw a mountain goat tag. This area is noted as the most
productive area in Montana for producing trophy, record book Billy's.
The Deer Creek Mountains area (out of Big Timber) is where we operate our
late season (end of November) mule
deer hunting when the rut is at its peak
and the big mossy horn mule deer bucks are out. This area also has a resident elk herd
population, so if you have a combination license and have not filled your elk
tag yet, the combination elk hunt and mule deer hunting opportunity is available.
Combination Elk Hunting and Mule Deer Hunting Camp:
We hunt the lower half of the Scapegoat Wilderness area #280. We operate
two back country camp sites, Meadow Creek (a 5 hour horse ride) and Camp Creek
(a 6.5 hour horse ride). The camps are about 8 miles apart. This gives us a
large area to hunt - about 15 square miles.
On the season opening big game elk hunt, we operate both camps.
For the remainder of the season, we use a hunt-rest rotation between the 2
camps. This allows time for the game to settle down and gives new game a
chance to locate in the rested area. This rotation system has seen our
success rate rise considerably.
Accommodations in
all our back country camps consist of a 18' x 23' cook tent, 14' x 17' sleeping
tents, tack/equipment tent and a corral. Each sleeping tent accommodates
three to four people with plenty of room for personal gear. Each sleeping
tent is equipped with a wood stove, cots and foam mattress. It is not the
Holiday Inn, but is really quite comfortable for all types of weather.
Meals are prepared by a full time
cook and served in the cook tent (breakfast and dinner). Snack lunches are
provided and packed with each hunter. We run a clean camp and serve good
wholesome food. Family style home cooking with roasts, steaks, pork chops
and fresh bakery goods.
We limit the group size in each camp to
6 hunters plus the full time cook & cook's helper and a minimum of three guides or up to six guides depending on the hunt mix (1on1 or
1on2).
Mountain Goat Camp:
We hunt the
Boulder drainage which is south of Big Timber, for our mountain goats (region
323). We have just recently begun hunting this area where we are the only
outfitters hunting mountain goats this late in the season. Thus our success rate
has been 100% with our 2002 Billy making the B&C permanent record book (11" with
6" bases - green measurement). We provide application services for the draw and
only operate this hunt when one of our hunters draws a mountain goat tag. The
odds of drawing a tag (based upon last years statistics) are 1:8.4 in region
323.
We limit our hunt to a 1 hunter / 1 guide
scenario. The accommodations for this hunt consist of a traveling camp where
the location is dependent upon the goat movement thus providing you the best
chance for taking a trophy Billy. This traveling camp consists of a 14'x17'
wall tent equipped with a wood stove, cots, foam mattresses and a small cooking
stove. The guide also performs the cooking duties - while the presentation
may be less formal, the quantity and quality of the meals are still top rate.
The use
of horses and mules to carry the gear, the traveling camp and the final trophy
ensures that the hunter and guide energy is reserved for the spot & stalk
activity.
Late Season Mule Deer Hunting Camp:
We
hunt both the upper Deer Creek drainage and the lower Deer Creek drainage of the
Deer Creek mountains for our late season mule deer hunting. Being later in
November, these mule deer hunts are at the peak of the rut and affords you the best
opportunity at those mossy horned trophy mule deer bucks. The same license can be used at
both the Scapegoat camp and this camp (either the Big Game Deer Only or the Big
Game
Combination licenses). This area also has a resident elk herd population, so
if you have a Combination license and have not filled your elk tag, the
combination elk hunt and mule deer hunting opportunity is available.
Accommodations for this camp are a step
up from our tents camps. Hunters stay in our bunkhouse, complete with hot
shower, bathroom, kitchenette and refrigerator. Julie cooks up the family style
meals that are prepared and served in our home. YUM-YUM!
We
limit the group size of this camp to 4 hunters per hunt and a minimum of 2
guides or up to 4 guides depending on the hunt mix (1on1 or 1on2).
