LICENSE
One of the Montana Big Game Hunting licenses is required, with each license entitling you to take birds and fishing in addition to the big game hunting animals. A Combination license entitles you to take an elk plus one buck deer (either mule deer or whitetail deer). The Big Game Deer Only license entitles you to take only a buck deer (either mule or whitetail). The Big Game Elk Only entitles you to take only an elk and not a deer. These licenses are available for outfitter clients on a guaranteed basis at a price of $1500 for the Combination license, $1100 for the Deer Only license and $1400 for the Elk Only license. It is absolutely guaranteed you will receive a license if you apply before March 15th and you provide the necessary paper work filled out correctly. To help you in this process, we suggest the following steps:

  • We will be sending you a Montana Big Game application form along with the Outfitter's Certificate in January.
  • Fill out the big game application properly, sign the Outfitter's Certificate and make out a certified check or money order for the correct amount of the license (payable to the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife, and Parks) and mail to:
      K Lazy Three Outfitters
      664 HWY 10 East
      Big Timber, MT 59011.
  • We will verify the correctness of the paperwork and then send it in to the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife, and Parks.
  • Your entire application should be mailed back to K Lazy Three any time in February but absolutely no later than March 7th.
  • When mailing the application back, each hunter should send their applications in separate envelops.
  • The Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife, and Parks will be sending out the Montana Big Game regulations in February. If you do not get a copy, contact them. Their address and phone are:
      1420 East Sixth Ave.
      Helena, MT 50620
      (406) 444-2950
  • If you need assistance, just give us a call at (406) 932-6793.
You may apply for a General big game license but there you are on a lottery drawing and have no guarantee of getting a license. The cost of these licenses are:
   Combination    $638
   Elk Only          $593
   Deer Only        $343
   Mountain Goat $1000

The mountain goat license is a drawing where the application deadline is May 1. You should draw for areas 323 or 280 and have the application back to us no later than April 15. See the Hunting Schedule - Mountain Goat hunt in the  Rates, Deposit, Schedule page for a description of our Assistance Service for the mountain goat drawing.

SHOOTING INFORMATION:
Most of the standard big game rifles work well with a preference for the magnums; from the .270, .30-06, 7mm, .300 to the .338. We recommend a partitioned style bullet for better penetration. A scope is necessary; while most shots are under 200 yards, there are times when a 300 yard shot is necessary. We try not to shoot over 300 yards. This is when a magnum helps. Most hunters sight in their rifles 1.5-3 inches high at 100 yards. We cannot stress how important it is to have your rifle accurately sighted in, and do a lot of practicing before you come.

EQUIPMENT
This is a fully guided hunt where all you need to bring is personal gear, clothing, and personal items. We must pack all equipment from the trail head to camp. For this reason, we must limit each hunter to two duffle bags not to exceed 35 lbs each. Following is a check list to help your planning.

GEAR

  • 2 canvas or nylon duffle bags (not to exceed 35 lbs each)
  • Rifle, sling and ammo (recommend 2 boxes )
  • Sleeping bag and pillow (an empty pillow case using a jacket as a pillow works well)
  • Binoculars
  • Hunting knife and compass
  • Orange vest (400 sq. inches minimum)
  • Lighter or waterproof matches
  • Flashlight with spare batteries
  • Emergency space blanket
  • Water bottle
  • Camera and film

CLOTHING:
Weather can vary from sunny and warm to zero or below. It is better to wear layers than one single heavy item so pack accordingly.

  • Heavy and light weight jacket
  • Wool pants and wool shirts are great!
  • Long underwear
  • Face mask or scarf
  • 2 pair gloves -one pair insulated and waterproof
  • 2 pair boots - one hiking / one waterproof pack type
  • Hooded sweater/sweat shirt
  • Wool and "poly" socks
  • Pants (jeans, wool, camo, microtech)
  • Shirts (Cabela's microtech shirts are great)
  • Caps - one warm and one light

PERSONAL ITEMS:

  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Towel, washcloth and soap
  • Compact mirror
  • Shaving gear
  • Chap stick
  • Sun glasses
  • Personal medications

When packing, it is better to have something along and not need it, than to not have it and need it. Use common sense and try to stay under 70 lbs. total (excluding your rifle).
