We operate three big game hunting areas at different times of
the fall hunting season.
The Scapegoat Wilderness
area (out of Lincoln) is where we operate our early season (September -
early November) combination elk hunt and mule deer hunts. The primary focus in this area is taking the mature bull
elk, however, we have taken some nice mountain mule deer during the elk hunt.
The Boulder Drainage area (south of Big Timber) is where we
operate our mid season (mid November) mountain goat hunt for those
hunters who are lucky enough to draw a mountain goat tag. This area is noted as
the most productive area in Montana for producing trophy, record book Billy's.
The Deer Creek Mountains area (out of Big Timber) is where we
operate our late season (end of November) mule
deer hunting when the rut is at its peak
and the big mossy horn mule deer bucks are out. This area also has a resident elk herd
population, so if you have a combination license and have not filled you elk tag
yet, the combination elk hunt and mule deer hunting opportunity is available.
Combination
Elk Hunt and Mule Deer Hunting:
We hunt the lower half of the Scapegoat Wilderness area #280. We have
a large resident elk population plus a number of other game animals in the
area; mule deer, black bear, mountain lion, grizzly bear, mountain goat and
moose. Also fishing and grouse. Our main concern is elk hunting or to bag a nice
mule deer buck, but it's nice to see grizzly and goat now and then.
Back in 1988 a fast moving fire hit the Scapegoat Wilderness area.
Some drainages were hit hard, some were skipped over completely. As a result
we have increased forage, yet there is plenty of cover for the elk.

Days start
early in hunting camp, with guides and wranglers saddling horses and the
cook preparing a hearty family style breakfast. An early horseback ride out from camp
will put you in a prime hunting area before dawn. We generally spend the
day elk hunting on foot, ending up back at camp or at the pickup point where
the horses will be a welcome sight to carry you back to camp. If your preference
is for a more relaxed hunt, a short hike from camp is available and can
also be productive.
Now for the reward, a large hearty family
style dinner and the opportunity to give the details of the one you bagged
or the big 6x6 that got away.
Mountain Goat Hunt:
We
hunt the mountain goats in the Boulder River drainage (region 323)
late in the season when the snow has come and the Billy's are in the peak of
rut. While the weather is less predictable, the hide is in absolutely prime
condition with the long winter hair which results in maximum "chaps",
with the added advantage that the goats are more consolidated.
This
is the ultimate spot and stalk hunt where the day is spent spotting the goats on
the mountain side. When the trophy is spotted, the stalk strategy and course is
established and then the excitement of the stalk and the final taking of the
"king" of the mountain - a trophy Billy!
We
use the horses and mules to carry you, the guide, the gear, the traveling
camp and the trophy. This ensures that the hunter and guide save their energy for
the stalk, which is primarily on foot.
Late
Season Mule Deer Hunting:
We
hunt the Deer Creek mountains (out of Big Timber) for the late season trophy
mule deer hunting. The daily routine is similar to that of our Scapegoat elk hunt except
our focus is on the trophy mule deer.
However, this area also has a resident elk herd
population, so if you have a combination license and have not filled the elk tag
yet, the combination elk hunt and mule deer hunting opportunity is available.
There
have been several small fires over the years affecting some parts of this
hunting area. As a result, we have increased forage and excellent habitat to
support a large mule deer population. Additionally, we are the only outfitters
to hunt trophy mule deer in these mountains since my grandfather a couple of
decades ago. All of this provides you with an excellent opportunity to take a
trophy mule deer.
I (Brett) guide and manage the
camps. We hire guides who know the areas and are enthusiastic hunters. Several of them have been with us
since we began outfitting in these areas. They will field dress the game and cape out the heads. In all cases our guides will adjust their pace to match the physical abilities of the hunter. It is not our policy to push the hunter beyond their limit just to improve "kill ratios".
These guys are first class, you will enjoy them!
We have some real trophy animals in our areas. Last year we saw a number of
trophies that anyone would be proud to hang on their wall. We have an excellent taxidermist in Lincoln. Jay Roberson has his shop in Lincoln, where you could see some of his work before or after the hunt. We also have a local meat processor. We deliver the game to him, he will cut to your specifications, package and
sharp freeze it for shipping. Most hunters take it on the plane on their return trip. The choice is up to you!
The choice is up to you as to hunting dates! The camps
are comfortable for all types of weather, with a lot of good food and western hospitality. We will do our best to make your hunt enjoyable and successful!
